Collinear Triple Hypergraphs and the Finite Plane Kakeya Problem

چکیده
We show that the problem of counting collinear points in a permutation (previously considered by the author and J. Solymosi in [1]) and the well-known finite plane Kakeya problem are intimately connected. Via counting arguments and by studying the hypergraph of collinear triples we show a new lower bound (25q/72 + O(1)) for the number of collinear triples of a permutation of Fq and a new lower bound (q(q + 1)/2 + 25q/72 + O(1)) on the size of the smallest Besicovitch set in Fq. Several interesting questions about the structure of the collinear triple hypergraph are presented.

The Finite Field Kakeya Problem
A Besicovitch set in AG(n, q) is a set of points containing a line in every direction. The Kakeya problem is to determine the minimal size of such a set. We solve the Kakeya problem in the plane, and substantially improve the known bounds for n > 4.
متن کاملThe Kakeya problem: a gap in the spectrum and classification of the smallest examples
Kakeya sets in the affine plane AG(2, q) are point sets that are the union of lines, one through every point on the line at infinity. The finite field Kakeya problem asks for the size of the smallest Kakeya sets and the classification of these Kakeya sets. In this article we present a new example of a small Kakeya set and we give the classification of the smallest Kakeya sets up to weight q(q+2...

We prove the joints conjecture, showing that for any N lines in R 3 , there are at most O(N 3 2) points at which 3 lines intersect non-coplanarly. We also prove a conjecture of Bourgain showing that given N 2 lines in R 3 so that no N lines lie in the same plane and so that each line intersects a set P of points in at least N points then the cardinality of the set of points is Ω(N 3). Both our ...
متن کاملTwo-Dimensional Electrostatic Problem in a Plane with Earthed Elliptic Cavity due to One or Two Collinear Charged Electrostatic Strips
A two-dimensional electrostatic problem in a plane with earthed elliptic cavity due to one or two charged electrostatic strips is considered. Using the integral transform technique, each problem is reduced to the solution of triple integral equations with sine kernels and weight functions. Closed-form solutions of the set of triple integral equations are obtained. Also closed-form expressions a...
متن کاملImpact of Integration on Straining Modes and Shear-Locking for Plane Stress Finite Elements
Stiffness matrix of the four-node quadrilateral plane stress element is decomposed into normal and shear components. A computer program is developed to obtain the straining modes using adequate and reduced integration. Then a solution for the problem of mixing straining modes is found. Accuracy of the computer program is validated by a closed-form stiffness matrix, derived for the plane rectang...
